Owned by the Dewan group, Sungma estate is part of Jayashree Tea Company, which also owns Risheehat, and Tukvar (Puttabong) estates. Sungma has consistently produced teas that fetch high prices in the International auctions. The estate is located about 30 kms south west of the Darjeeling, where the sky tends to be cloudy resulting in lower temperatures and mist filled days. This estate produces some of the finest Darjeeling teas, delicate in their aroma, but strong on palate, although this particular selection is mildly astringent. The tea garden has planted some clonal bushes, but most are Chinery. Slightly high fired, the slight toasted flavor accentuates the tea just right.
It is one of my favorite teas.
