Ever think where do the ladies who pluck the teas for us, buy teas for their home consumption? Well, they don't. They make their own teas in a manner different from the mass production techniques.
Handmade using traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation, these leaves are prepared by the artisans of the Mirik area. First at dawn, the young leaves and buds are carefully plucked from the plant, and washed in the natural mountain stream. The buds and leaves are then spread evenly on bamboo trays and left to wither. Periodically, the leaves are hand rolled to release the aromatic oils and water from the leaves, and withered further in the shade. This process of naturally withering, rolling, withering over and over helps in releasing the natural juices, and oxidizing the leaves naturally without use of mechanical equipment. Finally, when the leaf has turned the right shade of reddish-green, the trays are hung by the artisans on the branches of Orange trees for seven days or until the right level of moisture remains.
These hand made teas are extremely rare, produced in small 5 - 10 kg quantities specifically to our request by the local artisans of Mirik. These limited edition teas offer you a chance to taste the teas the way the locals having been drinking them for generations. Once a preserve of the local tradition, a limited quantity of this rare tea is being offered to you courtesy of my cousin Mr. Sunil Tiwari. Place your order today and taste the original Darjeeling tea as it was meant to be enjoyed.
