Graduating to Loose Leaf Tea
All tea is loose leaf tea at the time it is manufactured, but once the tea is manufactured, it can be packed in the form of either tea bags or loose leaf tea. While tea bags are a convenient way to brew tea, unfortunately, most of the “grocery store” tea bags often contain really inferior tea which has earned them the derision of those who enjoy the tea for what it is - a wonderful beverage to be enjoyed. Folks who really enjoy teas tend to go for “loose leaf tea”, i.e. tea that has not been packaged into the traditional flat teabags*.
Loose leaf tea from India
At Jaya Teas, we carry a lot of single estate loose leaf teas. Single estate loose teas are different from the regular Darjeelings and Assams sold in the store in that the typical Darjeelings, and Assams sold in the stores tend to be blends, produced to provide you a certain flavor or taste. Most of the teas we carry do not have a typical flavor. These teas are like wines, with their own individual exceptional flavor, appearance, aroma and taste. Since these teas have such individual characteristics, people who enjoy a particular tea, tend to hoard it, because once it is gone, it is gone for ever!

There are many a wonderful estates in India, including the famous Castleton Estate, Goomtee Estate, Margaret’s Hope Estate, Okayti Estate, all of them in Darjeeling. In Assam there are some wonderful estates by the banks of river Brahmaputra (daughter of Brahma), such as Mokalbari, Jultibari, Marangi. These estates have one thing in common - they strive to produce the best of best teas. Often times, teas from these estates fetch some of the highest prices in the world!
How to drink loose tea
If you are new to loose teas, there has never been a better time to try loose tea. Graduating from teabags to loose teas is not as difficult as it may seem. One has to remember that brewing tea takes a few minutes and requires at the very least, a tea sac or a sampler of teas? A sampler is a very economical way to enter the world of loose tea. Each sampler has three to four different kinds of teas giving you the opportunity to try the teas out before you decide to purchase it in bulk. You can even specify the type of loose tea you want in the sampler and we will send you just the tea you want to taste. When you have tried a couple of samplers you will know which tea really suits your palate and then you can stock up on that particular loose leaf tea.
Graduating to loose leaf tea
So, are you ready to try out some loose leaf tea? To learn to enjoy loose leaf tea all it takes is an open mind and little bit of inquisitiveness. Once you have tried loose leaf tea, I am quite sure you will never go back to tea bags!
*We do carry some tea bags in our portfolio - these tea bags however are of a different kind - these are hand made pyramid tea bags that are filled with leaf tea, unlike the flat teabags which are often filled with tea dust. The tea bags we carry in fact contain precisely the same tea that is available in loose form on our website.
